EU-Uganda Networking Event Highlights Collaborative Efforts and Tax Updates

Kampala, December 14, 2023 – The European Union (EU), through the Sustainable Business for Uganda Platform, hosted its second networking event, fostering collaboration between European and Ugandan businesses. The event was a melting pot of high-level discussions and strategic networking aimed at strengthening business ties and promoting sustainable development.

The event was officially opened by H.E. Jan Sadek, the European Union Ambassador to Uganda, who set the tone for the day by emphasizing the importance of collaboration and sustainable business practices. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Sadek highlighted the EU’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s economic growth and sustainable development.

A notable highlight of the event was the address by Sarah M. Chelangat, Commissioner of Domestic Taxes at the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). Commissioner Chelangat provided an insightful update on the current tax landscape in Uganda, shedding light on recent reforms and upcoming changes. Her presentation was followed by an engaging Question-and-Answer session, where attendees had the opportunity to seek clarification and discuss their concerns directly with the URA.

The event saw a diverse and distinguished gathering of approximately 120 guests. Attendees included high-level organizational leaders from the EU Delegation in Uganda, trade advisors, commercial attachés from various embassies and consulates, and representatives from member-state business associations and chambers. The presence of multinational companies of European origin operating in Uganda, European-owned MSMEs, subsidiaries, agents, and representatives of EU companies underscored the event’s significance.

Additionally, Ugandan companies with European equity, trade promotion agencies, European-based development partners, and representatives from European private funds were also in attendance. The event provided a unique platform for these stakeholders to network, share insights, and explore potential business opportunities.

The networking event was a testament to the strong and growing economic relationship between Europe and Uganda. It highlighted the mutual benefits of collaboration and the shared commitment to fostering sustainable business practices. The interactions and discussions held during the event are expected to pave the way for enhanced trade and investment between the two regions.
